NO CLIMATE DENIERS HERE

- Annie Gray

Family members travelling around Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and Germany in July managed to time their “winter” getaway with a heatwave that seemed to follow them everywhere they headed as much of Europe sweltered throughout the month. And data from a European climate agency said July was the warmest month the world has experienced since record-keeping began more than a century ago.

One report I read said that Paris has had its hottest day ever in July following an earlier heatwave in June which had already scorched western Europe. And all this in a city with very little air conditioning.

On top of this there have been the worrying wildfires in the Arctic and the massive ice melt in Greenland.

So rather than discussing climate change, many are now talking about a climate emergency or a climate crisis, and that seems hard to argue with.

But is the New Zealand business sector doing its bit? How proactive are our organisations, large and small, really being in reducing their emissions and finding innovative solutions to use less carbon and reduce waste?

While there may be some public sceptism the Climate Leaders Coalition does seem to be leading the charge and giving its signatories a voice while spurring others onto bigger and bolder measures (page 8).

This issue we also examine international trends in workplace design and how a very holistic approach can lead to a growth mindset for a company (page 6).

Our special feature this month looks into how leaders need to be as adaptable and flexible as their workers are angling to be (page 12).

Have a good month.
