Five new cruise ships to try

- Siobhan Downes

What makes a cruise holiday extra special? Knowing you’re among the first to experience a shiny new ship. From headlinegrabbing giants to ultra-luxury liners, here are five new cruises to book.

Icon of the Seas – Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is synonymous with superlative ships, and this 20-deck monster will officially claim the title of the world’s biggest cruise ship when it sets out on its maiden voyage in January.

The liner will comfortably hold 5610 passengers, and will be packed with fun features and activities, including the largest waterpark at sea, more than 40 places to eat and drink, and seven pools (a different spot for a dip every day of the week).

You’ll be able to book your spot on the behemoth on week-long cruises from Miami to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Viva – Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Viva made its debut in

August, as the second ship in Norwegian Cruise Line’s stunning new Prima class – and it’s a ship that has something for everyone.

You certainly won’t get cabin fever on this 3219-passenger ship, with a three-level racetrack for go-karting, a free-fall drop slide, and a virtual reality playground among the activities on offer.

Those who prefer a more zen cruising experience can book themselves in

The Haven – an exclusive enclave tucked away at the top of the ship and consisting of 107 suites, with a private restaurant and lounge, sundeck with infinity pool and 24-hour butler service.

Norwegian Viva is sailing a series of Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries in 2024.

Silver Nova – Silversea

Looking for an ultra-luxury liner? Silversea’s newest ship, Silver Nova, is unlike anything else at sea.

The ship – which launched in August as the first in the new Nova class – is one of the most spacious out there, carrying just 728 passengers, with every suite boasting a balcony and butler service.

One of the most notable features is its asymmetrical layout, which puts key features like the pool deck at the side of the ship, instead of in the centre. This results in spectacular views of the sea, and immerses guests in each destination.

In January, Silver Nova will embark on the 71-day Grand Voyage South America, before sailing to Australia, New Zealand and throughout Asia.

Also look out for Silver Ray, the second Nova-class ship, which is due to debut in the northern hemisphere summer.

Oceania Vista – Oceania Cruises

If delicious-dining options are a top priority for your cruise, look no further than Oceania Cruises, which is known for having “the finest cuisine at sea” – and its newest ship in more than a decade, Vista, doesn’t disappoint in this department.

The 1200-passenger ship – the first in a new Allura class – boasts 11 eateries, including favourites such as Italian specialty restaurant Toscana, as well as newcomers like wellness restaurant Aquamar Kitchen, serving up superfood smoothies and poke bowls, and an onboard bakery.

Solo cruisers can sail in style, with dedicated solo cabins, as well as Concierge Level staterooms designed for singles, complete with a private veranda and access to an exclusive lounge.

Oceania Vista is offering a series of itineraries exploring Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean from of Miami over the northern hemisphere winter.

Queen Anne – Cunard

When Queen Anne makes its debut next May, it will be the first new Cunard ship to set sail in more than 12 years.

If you’re after a ship that harks back to the golden age of travel, Queen Anne will be it, combining a classic cruising experience – including the “White Star Service” the luxury British cruise line is renowned for – with modern comforts, such as a wellness studio.

Queen Anne will depart on its maiden world voyage in January 2025, which will include a visit to New Zealand.
