Getting married outdoors practically guarantees a wonderfully fresh and fragrant backdrop, but to zhush things up, add pockets of flowers in pots, baskets or urns. Use them on the day to fill in any gaps, and move them into any spot that lacks colour.

PANSIES IN POTS

You can find a pansy to fit virtually any colour scheme you desire, but if they are not in season, choose any prolific flowering annual available from the potted colour section at a garden centre. Mix with low-growing alyssum, which has a deliciously sweet fragrance.

HIGH & MIGHTY

For an elegant decoration, fill an urn with fresh flowers and display it on top of a plinth. Insert moist floral foam into the urn, packing it in so that it doesn't move about. Insert flower and foliage stems into the foam, allowing some of the foliage to drape over the sides.

ROMANTIC LOOK

Charity shops sell baskets for next to nothing. Insert a plastic bowl into the basket then pack in wet floral foam. Use floral tape to secure it in place – taping over the top of the foam from each side of the basket (if you don't do this, the bowl will slide around). Then add flowers.

DECORATE A PERGOLA

Decorate a wooden pergola or arch with floaty fabrics and fabulous florals. Choose sheer fabrics that complement your colour scheme and drape over your pergola. Next, create flower decorations for each corner using floral foam cages (such as Oasis Dekorette Bricks) or netted floral foam garlands, depending on the size of your arrangement. Attach wire or cable ties to the sides of the foam cages first. Insert foliage into the wet foam, then fill in the gaps with flowers. Start with your largest flowers then add in the smaller ones. It helps to work on a lazy Susan so that you can turn your design as you go, ensuring there are no gaps in the arrangement. Secure the arrangement to the pergola with wire or cable ties.

Embellish a garden pergola with fresh flowers, hanging crystals and shimmering beads or lights.
