DUST OFF YOUR COLD FRAME

NZ Gardener - Garden Diary 2018 - - Garden Tasks This Week -

The nights are cooling down quickly now. If you’re sowing seeds, tuck them up at night in a simple cold frame made by resting an old window over a raised box. Or invest in an inexpensive plastic tunnel to accelerate seedling growth. But be careful on hot days. While they keep the soil warm at night, they can overheat on hot days, so lift up the sides during the day to avoid frying your plants. While winter vegetables may benefit from the extra shelter and warmth to get them started, they are not tropical plants.
