WOAD

NZ Gardener - Gifts from the Gardens - - Crafts -

Woad (Isatis tinctoria) was the dominant blue dye in Europe until indigo was imported into Europe in larger quantities. Soft baby blues to rich blues can be obtained from the leaves, depending on the strength of the dye vat. An olive dye can be produced from the seeds. The leaves are harvested in the first year, the seeds in the second.
