The main flax used for weav­ing is Phormium tenax, or harakeke. How­ever, the moun­tain flax, Phormium cookianum, can be used for smaller items, such as woven flow­ers. Moun­tain flax, or wharariki, is not as durable as harakeke, so it’s not ideal for larger items, where the leaves can split.
