MY SURPRISE HARVEST

NZ Gardener - - Letters -

I was so surprised to see the results in my latest NZ Gardener of the supersized vege challenge where readers grew ‘Rampicante’.

I did not take part in the challenge as I have limited space in my home garden. However, after the potatoes were dug out at our beach house in January, I was left with a big vacant space. I bought a single ‘Rampicante’ plant at the Waihi Beach market and planted it in late January. It has been thoroughly neglected but has grown rapidly, taking over the back lawn.

I harvested about 50 small zucchinis which we enjoyed, and to my amazement, at Easter I found two huge zucchinis hiding under equally large leaves. They ended up as tasty relish, and I just wanted to share this phenomenal success. Janet Danks, AUCKLAND
