LEVEN

Kath Pilcher says her store in Cambridge’s charming Empire Street brings together “a little bit of everything that’s a little bit different”. Leven is a cool, understated space with a mix of quality fashion by New Zealand designers, as well as ceramics, candles, books, handbags, jewellery, pampering products and kids’ stuff. Waikato-sourced goods include quirky Toodles Noodles ceramics and kids’ books and decorative wrapping paper by Ami Muir. 33 Empire St, (07) 823 5209, leven.co.nz

VOLARE

Volare is the little sister of Hamilton-based Volare, masters and makers of handcrafted sourdough bread. The Cambridge store has ciabatta, chunky grainy loaves, Turkish pide and, of course, excellent sourdough. Manager Nikita Brough says they pride themselves on a well-stocked cabinet of food to go, such as fresh sandwiches, scones, muffins, doughnuts and pastries. The jalapeno and cheddar scones are delicious. 29 Empire St, (07) 444 5142, volarebread.com

HUS DESIGN STORE

Hus owner Emma Osment loves beautiful things and this vintage building on Empire Street provides the perfect backdrop for her splendid assembly of furniture, fittings, homeware, linens and lovely garments. You’ll find classic leather sofas, handsome dining tables made from recycled elm, solid concrete tables, elegant outdoor furniture and more. Emma also provides an interior design service. 20 Empire St, (07) 827 0470, hus.co.nz
