“In New Zealand we’re quite con­ser­va­tive,” says home­owner and fash­ion re­tailer Jac­quie Hud­son. She thinks New Zealan­ders can some­times be hes­i­tant to em­brace colour – in their homes as well as in their wardrobes. “Peo­ple of­ten say to me, ‘Where am I go­ing to wear that?’ and I think it’s the same with our houses – we’re quite prac­ti­cal. My ad­vice is if you love wear­ing a cer­tain colour you’ll prob­a­bly like to have it some­where in your home. Don’t go with what’s in fash­ion colour­wise, go with what you love, what makes you happy. Search out that per­fect shade, and it will keep you smil­ing all day.”

“Some­times we think we should be a bit more grown up,” says Jac­quie. She reck­ons a touch of luxe vel­vet on the liv­ing room so­fas (cur­rently pink and or­ange, nat­u­rally) could do it, but she’ll have to wait un­til the kids are a bit older be­fore she makes...
