Q&A

NZ House & Garden - - GARDENS - Rex Williams

Hours spent per week in the garden: I’m a weekend gardener and Deirdre does the weeding and dead-heading during the week.

Most used tool: Spade – anything with a long handle since I’m 1.87m tall. I’m on to number four! It’s hard to find a spade with decent steel.

Clivias grow well here because: They like shade and aren’t heavily dependent on moisture.

My best tip for other gardeners: People spend $50 on a plant, put it in the ground and think that’s it. For healthy growth: dig a deep hole, add compost and sheep pellets, pop in your plant, then cover the earth with bark mulch. I try to time planting just before it rains, so I don’t need to water them in.
