This kitchen plays on the Frank Lloyd Wright idea of “com­pres­sion and re­lease”, where de­sign is imag­ined as a stage and a cave, say Kate Ro­gan and Eva Nash of Ro­gan Nash Ar­chi­tects. The kitchen is the moody “cave”, which opens to the airy din­ing room “stage”. The own­ers of­ten en­ter­tain: “So the kitchen had to be de­signed for so­cial­is­ing and some se­ri­ous cook­ing,” says Eva. “The scullery has an ex­tra dish­washer, cof­fee ma­chine and sparkling wa­ter tap.” The most no­table fea­ture: “The use of ma­te­ri­als – wal­nut ve­neer and a black gran­ite splash­back. The is­land is de­signed as a piece of fur­ni­ture with a black gran­ite bench­top and Re­sene ‘Foundry’ lac­quer. Hay About a Stool bar stools were cus­tom up­hol­stered to com­ple­ment the colours of the cab­i­netry.” Judges’ com­ments: “We loved the clean, sleek lines and beau­ti­ful cab­i­netry in this kitchen. The ceil­ing, pen­dant lights and pol­ished floor all work per­fectly.”
