Q&A

NZ House & Garden - - GARDENS -

Most significant plant: The trees. Three giant Magnolia grandiflora, Irish yews, karaka, English beech. This garden would be nothing without them; with them, it’s wonderfully overscaled with tiny courtyards. Favourite new plant: The podophyllum. Expensive and slow to grow but its leaves are a kaleidoscope. Most-used tool: Secateurs to keep things in trim. I always buy cheap ones because I lose them all the time. Best tip for other gardeners: Spend money on beautiful soil and good preparation.

I like to: Propagate my own plants. If you’ve got something unusual, spread it around among other gardeners to ensure its survival.

Hours spent in the garden: Sometimes all day but I average four hours a week.
