BROOKLYN FLOWERS

One of the few male florists in the country, Brook Thomson wanted to add a “hint of masculinity” to the interior of Brooklyn Flowers, his new Ponsonby Road shop. He designed it himself with copper and navy touches and industrial concrete benches. To make flowers more affordable, Brook offers a $25 market pick, and will soon host in-store workshops. 65 MacKelvie St, Ponsonby, brooklynflowers.co.nz

XOONG

Chinese and Japanese combine with the utmost diplomacy at Xoong. With the help of interior design studio Ctrl Space, the eatery includes a minimalist Japanese room and a lively Chinese bar. Head chef Cameron Knox’s menu is equally infused, with dishes such as wood roasted duck with oyster mushrooms and a drunken sauce. 424 Mt Eden Rd, Mt Eden, xoong.co.nz
