Inspired by the French, Marlborough’s top wineries want to safeguard their reputation so wine lovers can more easily distinguish the good stuff from bulk wine. So far 40 wineries are involved in the Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) initiative, and Dog Point winery’s Ivan Sutherland (pictured) says it’s needed to protect the brand recognition of quality Marlborough sauvignon blanc. To qualify wine must meet strict criteria including being made from 100 per cent Marlborough-grown grapes. If it says AMW on the label of your next sauvignon blanc, you are about to enjoy one of Marlborough’s finest wines.
