First Christmas

NZ House & Garden - - HOMES -

Suzanne and Richard’s most memorable Christmas was just a month after they had bought the house, even before they had moved in. “The family said, ‘We’re having Christmas at your place.’” All 44 of them. “We had cardboard on the floor and sheets covering gaping holes in the ceiling and there was debris everywhere,” says Suzanne, who had the family-sized oven installed that week and was planting white roses around the patio on Christmas morning. Luckily it was a perfect summer’s day. Suzanne covered the outdoor concrete tables with linen tablecloths and lined them with homemade miniature Christmas trees and fairy lights. “We opened presents on the lawn and everyone brought something for the meal. It turned out to be the best Christmas ever.”
