Metamorphoses
Chauncey Flay sculpts with a range of found materials both natural and human-made including coral and obsidian, plus stone, concrete and brick salvaged from demolished buildings. Using the labour-intensive process of stone faceting, he hones timeworn blocks into sleek polyhedrons, which project from an unworked portion like a crystalline form. Flay’s materials carry histories of their own. Parliament V takes its title and components from New Zealand Parliament House, which was dismantled in part to allow for earthquake strengthening in the 1990s. Finely honed Tākaka marble sits atop its original concrete and brick substructure: the creation and the ruin are both present. We are reminded that all creation is impermanent, and all things are undergoing a continuous, if slow, transformation. Kate Mullins
