opulent colours, then pare back the layers in summer and switch out the velvets and puffy comforters for soft washed linens or woven cotton throws in a cool, restful colour palette with hints of summer floral prints.

Popular looks this year seem split – either a very luscious patterned and plumped bed with loads of pillows, or an organic style using earthy plains, which is still layered but a little less so.

Kerry Jackson of M.M Linen describes the company as a botanic brand, so while this style is less influenced by fashion, new ranges do acknowledge colour trends. “Bedding follows on from fashion even more closely these days, so is more aligned to fashion colours like rust and earthy colours, sea and olive greens, and purples and mauves are coming through strongly, mixed with warm ochre golds.”

Kerri has noticed two approaches: “If you have drama on the bed with big florals, then opt for a quieter room – let the bed do the talking. Or have a plainer bed with an interesting wallpaper.”

At the other end of the style spectrum, customers at Whakatāne’s George Street Linen can’t get enough of plain linen bedding. Owner Greg Davidson says: “Linen is way ahead of anything else. People want a natural look and a natural fibre, in a relaxed look that isn’t heavily styled – cushions have gone back on the sofa. Currently, they’re using the same colour for everything, opting for earthy colours – rust, chocolate and any shade of green from pine to sage. And you can’t ignore white.” For summer, the company will add muted pastels such as lilac, caramel, white, banana and duck-egg blue.

Lisa Rose of Patersonrose sees a move away from earthy tones towards pastels and bold colours. And for patttern: “Stripes, spots and gingham are always incredibly popular.”

Across the board, natural fibres such as linen, cotton, wool jersey, cotton velvets and silk are trending. Says Bianca: “Natural fibres breathe while repelling moisture away from your skin helping you sleep soundly. Bedding made using natural fibres also lasts twice as long as man-made fibres.”
