If you prefer your drink with a view the Maude Wines Tasting Room (right) has a treat for you. Situated near the Maude Wines vineyard and winery, you can gaze out at the snow-capped alps while sampling its Central Otago pinot noirs, chardonnay and riesling. Enjoy a paddle of wines or wine by the glass, alongside tasty bites from the seasonal menu.

Don’t rub your eyes – you’re not in Mexico but in Golden Bay. Kiwi Spirit Distillery (left) is home to what is believed to be the only agave tequila farm outside of Mexico, a family-owned 10ha distillery and cellar door. Sample the gin, vodka, whiskey and tequila and buy more to take home. There’s also a range of moreish fruit and honey liqueurs.
