Karen Walters
Gone But Not Forgotten is one of many circular pieces that Karen Walters (Ngāpuhi/European) has made over the years. Her work includes wall art, hanging sculptures, large outdoor pieces and occasionally those that are jewellery-sized. She uses native timbers, in this instance heart rimu rescued from the Christchurch earthquakes. The circular format links the past and present, referencing the cycle of life and the spiritual connection between the living and those who have passed away. The huia feathers represent ancestors gone but not forgotten. Discovering her Māori heritage made sense of concepts Walters had been drawn to for many years, strengthening the spiritual connection she has felt. Studies in education, graphic design and visual arts underpin her work. She and partner, jeweller Mike Walters, work from a home studio, Kereru Gallery.
