Rebecca Hazard
A relative newcomer, Rebecca creates giant, photo-realist paintings of glistening, raw meat. Meticulously rendered, the paintings simultaneously allure and repel, and are unnervingly sensual. At more than 2m square, the works are imposing. We are challenged to reconcile these visceral, confronting images with our dispassionate treatment of meat as a resource for our consumption. Artists have engaged with meat throughout western art history, from the Dutch masters of the 16th century to modern performance artists. In keeping with the older of these traditions, Hazard’s meat also serves as a memento mori: a reminder of our mortality, that we too are made of flesh and blood. Hazard attended the Rome Art Program in summer 2017 and was a finalist in the National Contemporary Arts Award and the Wallace Art Awards in 2018.
