Relaxed Living, Happy Home

by Atlanta Bartlett & Dave Coote, Ryland Peters & Small/Bookreps NZ, $59.99

Homes that convey sustainable design, quality over quantity and inspire the rediscovery of the simple pleasures of life are the mainstays of “the simple mindset” design philosophy held by these authors. They certainly don’t believe in homes designed as status symbols or around today’s fashions. That, of course, means that the examples in the book have a predominantly shabby chic, rustic vibe – dreamy spaces filled with pale colours, timbers and linen. It’s a very specific style that is nostalgic and charming, but that will not be to everyone’s taste. Much of the advice given, however, applies to any type of interior or decorating project. As the authors suggest: “Think long and hard about what home means to you and how you like to live… when it comes to interior design, change can be an expensive business, so it is vital that you get the structural elements right from the start.”
