13 July to 23 September, New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata The life and art of expatriate New Zealand artist Douglas MacDiarmid is saluted in a survey of his work encompassi­ng portrait and figurative paintings and showcasing his bold use of colour and artistic diversity, from realist figuration through to geometric abstractio­n. During the 1940s, MacDiarmid was part of the Christchur­ch-based creative boundarypu­shers known as The Group where his mentors included Evelyn Page, Rita Angus, Leo Bensemann and Theo Schoon.
