Past: When Nicole was seven, she wrote a story about all the cats on her North Shore, Auckland street. It wasn’t exactly gripping content, but it solidified in her mind that writing was what she wanted to do when she was all ‘grown up’. In between leaping through waves and the local bush, her love for storytelling eventually led to a Bachelor of Communications degree majoring in journalism at AUT. During her studies she worked in a national newsroom covering everything from earthquakes to pet possums. Present: Nicole is a freelance writer well-armed with metal straws and cotton bulk bags as she documents her journey living plastic-free on the website thisNZlife. Her stories about a designer knitter who creates oversize sweaters and a wire sculptor recently featured on the site. Nicole also exercises her creative skills working part-time with lighting designer James Russ wiring grapevines for lights. Future: This year Nicole is traveling to Canada to take on the Rockies – hopefully without any grizzly bear run-ins. At 6ft1, she’s praying her sheer stature will send them packing and that she’ll fit right in with the locals. Her heart is in magazine writing and she plans to continue sharing people’s stories as long as she can.
