The crème de la crème of the nation’s contemporary art scene is represented in an exhibition of winners and a selection of finalists in the country’s wealthiest art awards. Established in 1992 by Aucklandbased arts philanthropist Sir James Wallace, the high-profile awards honour and support New Zealand visual artists. The show is made up of 50 works including the Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award winner Imogen Taylor, whose painting Refusal To Yield references Bauhaus, cubism and modernism and is described by judges as “bold, memorable, confident and deeply informed”. There were 515 entries for the 2018 awards. pataka.org.nz
