Split-Level View Finder: Theo Schoon and New Zealand Art

-

27 July to 3 November, City Gallery, Wellington

A landmark review of the works of controversial Dutch/New Zealand painter, printmaker, photographer, gourd and jade carver and ceramicist Theo Schoon (1915 to 1985) investigates his influence on 21st-century art and examines his complex inquiry-driven practice. Viewed as a catalyst of modernism, Schoon’s work is presented as being in dialogue or dispute with other cultural forms and artists of his era. Split-Level View Finder includes works by Rita Angus, A.R.D. Fairburn, Rolfe Hattaway, Denis Knight Turner, Douglas MacDiarmid, Paratene Matchitt, Selwyn Muru, Arnold Wilson and Ans Westra. citygallery.org.nz
