Laurie Steer: The Best Potter in the World
13 March to 6 June, Tauranga Art Gallery toi tauranga
Mount Maunganui-based potter Laurie Steer, a specialist in wood-fired ceramics, plays with ideas of ego, capitalism, consumption and commerce in a show that demonstrates his ability to connect ancient pottery traditions with fantastical forms that exist in the sphere between fine arts and crafts. In The Best Potter in the World, Steer, who trained under the late celebrated ceramic artist Barry Brickell, seeks to question modes of display and the role of art as merchandise — ongoing themes in his trajectory of work. artgallery.org.nz
