4 tips to avoid skin harm on the farm

-

Slip into shade

If possible, move outside tasks to where there is shade or inside. If not, try to schedule them when UV radiation levels are lower, such as early morning or late afternoon. You can check UV levels through the app UVNZ or go to niwa.co.nz and click on the UV forecast on the menu at right.

A good rule of thumb is the shorter your shadow, the higher the UV radiation.

Eat lunch in the shade & reapply sunscreen

One of the most effective ways to reduce overall UVR exposure is to take breaks under trees or other shaded areas where possible. It’s also a good idea to re-apply sunscreen 1 hour either side of solar noon (usually around 1pm) when UVR is at its strongest.

Use a good sunscreen

Apply a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30. Ensure sunscreen is within its expiry date and not stored anywhere too hot, like a ute glovebox. Stick it in a cooler bag with an ice pack and your drink bottle. Apply a thick layer of sunscreen by 8am to all exposed skin.

Skin checks for early detection of skin cancers

Get to know your skin; being aware of any changes is key to finding skin cancer early. Get your skin checked by a doctor.
