Winding up the purists
Jarred Haig’s ’96 V2 STi is already well known for being the Subby on bags from the deep south, but he has recently pulled it off the road to undergo a bit of open-heart surgery. It’s running the stock EJ20 currently, but Jarred wanted to spice things up with a bit of flare that would stray from what a purist’s WRX would look like. The engine of choice a Mazda 13B bridgey with big single snail hanging off the side. Yep, there will shortly be a rotang pulsating away inside the Subby’s engine bay. The car’s original four-wheel-drive system will be converted to a rear-wheel set-up, and the hope is to push a relatively humble 298kW (400hp) out of the 13B to make for a street-legal head-turner. The process has only just started, and the car will retain most of what it had already been running — Whiteline front and rear sway bars, a Whiteline bump-steer kit, and 17x8-inch fifteen52 tarmac wheels — with a new set of three-piece wheels on the horizon for the future.
We’ll keep a close eye on this sacrilegious piece of awesome for a future update.
