NZ Performance Car : Hi, Andrew. What’s your background in cars?

Andrew: Hey, NZPC. I’ve always been a weekend warrior with cars, and meeting all the guys in the Japanese scene down here [in Christchurch] got me more involved. Hands down, I can credit the release of The Fast and the Furious for getting me into cars all those years back.

Do you favour a specific brand?

No favourites; strangely enough, I’ve owned more BMWs than anything else, but have a big soft spot for early Evos.

How did you end up owning this Chaser?

I was looking at an Audi S4 when Brad Whitlow, my workmate at the time, found this JZX90 with factory aero and some wheels. I test drove it and got the JZ bug, then it turned into what it is now.

The JZX100 seems to be the go-to choice these days; what was it about the X90 that made you want to own one instead?

It was years ago that I bought it, before JZX100 was the JZ starter pack. I liked how no one else had the JZX90; also, Alex Smith’s JZX90 Mark II had left a lasting impression on me.

Is there as much aftermarket support for them as for the X100s?

Plenty if you go looking overseas, which I did, but locally not so much. Luckily, a lot of the suspension stuff is like Lego between the 90s and the 100s.

What was the initial goal for the car, and has it stayed true to that?

It was initially bought as a weekend toy in which I could go to Ruapuna and do wheelies, so it hasn’t stayed true to that. The running joke with the boys is that it doesn’t get used; it just gets used for a short window in summer, and the odd ChaChaCha event, due to being ‘kit low’ — it likes catching and dragging everywhere.

Do you have any future plans for it, besides more use?

Ideally, a TD06, more fuel, [a] Link, and a tune — but anyone who knows me will tell you [that] that’s been on the list a year or two now.

We hope to see it happen sooner rather than later. Cheers, Andrew.
