The Eternal Implosion of Australian Rugby

NZ Rugby World - - 2017 The Year In Review -

It turned out, somewhat surprisingly, that last year wasn’t the nadir for Australian rugby. Nope. Not even close.

Last year they at least won three Super Rugby games against New Zealand opposition. This year they didn’t notch a solitary victory. Crowds, which were low last year, were lower again this year.

Playing numbers fell further and there was a host of executive resignations from within the Australian Rugbycluding their chief executive.

The Australian players’ association ended up at war with the ARU and the ill-feeling about the way the process to eliminate one team from Super Rugby was handled will leave bitterness and anger for years to come.

It’s actually hard to imagine how things could have been worse.
