HABANA CALLS IT A D AY

NZ Rugby World - - The Breskdown -

LEGENDARY SPRINGBOKS WING has announced his retirement from all forms of rugby.

The 34-year-old veteran revealed in late April that he wouldn’t be playing again after major knee surgery last year and then a few days later suggested it wasn’t his decision to call it quits.

He said that his retirement was more the choice of Toulon coach Fabien Galthie, who disagreed with medical advice that Habana could return.

“I returned to training five months ago,” Habana told AFP. “The medical teams told me I was fit. Not to play is not my choice.

“I repeat, I have worked really hard for nine months to come back and I have not had the opportunity to play again.

“Jonny Wilkinson retired after a double [European Cup] and Richie McCaw quit after becoming a world champion.

“Me, I was unable to do this. To stop this season, it’s really tough. But this is the way things are. When I look at the past, I can say to myself well it was just one season that wasn’t great.”

| JUNE/JULY 2018 Byebye... GREAT LOSS Bryan Habana will be greatly missed.
