First five-eighth Bryn Gatland should prove to be a handy acquisition this season. With Lima Sopoaga heading o shore, the question of who would fill the No 10 jersey in 2019 was always going to be hanging over the Highlanders.

It looked like Fletcher Smith had the claims to it, but he then signed with the Hurricanes. Gatland is still young, but has shown plenty of talent and ability in his time with the Blues.

With Super Rugby experience under his belt, he’ll be ready to orchestrate the Highlanders o ence this season if given the opportunity ahead of the returning Marty Banks.
