THE IMPETUOUS NATURE OF YOUTH
In losing Pulu and Ngatai, the Chiefs backline lost half of its seasoned campaigners.
Other than Damian McKenzie and Anton Lienert-Brown, there is a lot of young talent in this squad that will get a good opportunity to play, but may be a work in progress.
There’s plenty of potential in the depth of their backline, but unlike that of their forwards, the majority of their backups are largely unproven at the top level.
In the midfield, LienertBrown has the most experience in his 50 matches. Alex Nankivell is the next closest – with nine appearances to his name.
It’s a similar story in the outside backs, with new recruits Etene Nanai-Seturo and Ataata Moeakiola yet to earn a Super Rugby cap.
Outside of their backline depth, Chiefs fans will be looking for their team to secure the football a lot better in 2019.
Last season, they were the second worst team handling the ball, committing 97 handling errors, behind only the Lions who committed 202. The Chiefs also lost the fourth most turnovers (268) last season. It will be important for them to try to limit giving the ball away, particularly in the tight contests, if they’re to finish any higher on the ladder in 2019.
