THE OUTSIDER BEAUDEN BARRETT
ALL BLACKS EXPERIENCE: 1 Game OTHER EXPERIENCE: Has been key leader at Hurricanes since 2016. QUALITIES: Is a world class talent and respected globally for his ability to make things happen out of nothing.
Has an incredible skill-set, strong work ethic and the sort of easy-going, inclusive approach that endears him to his peers.
Has been one of the key tactical drivers of the team and leaders since 2014. QUESTION MARKS: Hasn’t captained the All Blacks in a test – only a game against the Barbarians – and hasn’t had captaincy experience at the Hurricanes either.
Is already burdened with plenty of responsibility as the team’s tactical driver and hasn’t yet revealed what he intends to do after the World Cup re his contract. NZRW VIEW: Barrett, assuming he stays in New Zealand, will be a crucial part of the team’s leadership for the whole time he is available.
He’s respected and influential but will be better used as a deputy captain where he can be heavily involved in guiding the team but not burdened with the captaincy.
