ALL BLACKS EXPERIENCE: Leadership group since 2016 OTHER EXPERIENCE: Captained Hurricanes to Super Rugby final in 2015 and victory in 2016. QUALITIES: He’s driven, passionate and ferociously determined to impose himself. Doesn’t accept a dropping of standards by anyone and will let his peers know if he thinks they are not pulling their weight.

Coles has presence and personality and demands the best from those around him. QUESTION MARKS: Has only signed a two-year extension and now he’s in his mid-30s, might play 60 minutes more regularly.

He’s also prone to being a little fiery and has overstepped the mark at times which he can’t do as captain. Has also got a reputation with referees who like him but know he can be challenging. NZRW VIEW: He would make an engaging and inspiring All Blacks captain given the way he has fought back from injury.

But probably his window has passed and he will be more use to the team as a strong influence in the leadership group.
