Stephen Larkham was not a typical-looking No 10. He was tall and gangly and had an unusual gait. He also looked like he was about half asleep when he played.

But the package, however much it looked like it shouldn’t be able to work, did. His pace was deceptive. He picked astute angles and worked passes off his running lines that split defences.

He wasn’t a great long kicker but he was a great short kicker and Larkham seemed to meander through games as if he was going nowhere yet constantly stretched and broke defences in different ways. He and George Gregan turned a good side into a great side and the Brumbies would never have won their titles without Larkham.
