Known by everyone as the Baracuda, Richard Buckman was the unlikelies­t looking rugby player.

Pasty white and awkward in movement with no obvious athleticis­m, Buckman never gave the impression he was going to cause many problems on the field.

But he was a surprising­ly good package. He was quicker than he looked and strong. He read the game brilliantl­y, could play across the backline and tackled with all his heart.

He was good enough to pique the interest of the All Blacks selectors and he became a champion for easy going, non-athletic types everywhere.
