The Chiefs had languished mid-table for most of Super Rugby – their only achievements of note being making the semifinal in 2004 and the final in 2009.

They were massive under achievers then

Dave Rennie turned up in 2012 and in his first year in charge, he led them to a title. They won another in 2013 and made the playoffs every year until Rennie left after the 2017 season.
