Top tips for strengthen­ing your wellbeing

One of the simplest ways to explain how to strengthen and look after our mental wellbeing is to use a sport analogy.

When we think about all of the actions athletes take to prepare their bodies for training and games, we often see a consistent routine that includes recovery time, tough training sessions, games and rehab for injuries or niggles.

The same principle applies for looking after our mental wellbeing. When we consistent­ly include the below tools as part of our routine we develop our level of mental fitness (our resilience and ability to cope with challenge). Just like physical fitness, if we don’t continue to look after it, our fitness with decrease over time.

Athletes that report high levels of mental wellbeing and overall wellbeing are often doing the below things really well:

• Know what tools work for them: Identifyin­g the tools and strategies and ensuring they are supporting all areas of their wellbeing is a great way to strengthen your mental fitness.

• They’ve made it a habit: Include the activities and actions as part of their weekly routine as they would an appointmen­t or meeting.

• They make time to check in regularly: Be consistent with checking in on how they’re feeling so they can adjust when they need to.
