Drinking fountain approved
LAWRENCE’S thirst is about to be quenched.
The Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board last week approved a request to install a public drinking fountain in Ross Pl.
The idea was proposed by Waihola resident Tim Dickie in April.
The latest plans provided to the board highlighted more detailed designs and a breakdown of installation costs.
Of the three options presented, board members were in favour of the wooden cylinder design that resembled rubbish bins already in the main street of Lawrence.
Board member Geoff Davidson supported the idea but wanted to know where the fountain could go.
Board chairman Garry McCorkindale said the preferred site was outside the information centre and museum, as it had access to the storm drains.
The approved design included a water bottle filling station and dog bowl in addition to the standard drinking fountain.
The board was impressed with the way it incorporated a gold pan for the bowl, which fitted in with the town’s historic ties to gold mining.
The cost of the fountain was estimated to be $3595, and about $1500 for installation.
The board approved the installation of the drinking fountain outside the museum in Ross Pl at a cost of up to $5100 from the board’s project funds.
The installation was also subject to approval from the museum.
