Caversham makes it 28 on the trot
CAVERSHAM has extended its winning streak in the Southern Premier League to 28 games.
The perennial powerhouse chalked up its 10th consecutive win this season, beating Roslyn Wakari 42 in a rare appearance at Forsyth Barr Stadium last night.
The club is unbeaten in the league since 2015. It won all 18 matches last year and is well on its way to collecting a fourth title in a row.
It led 10 at the break but Roslyn fought back to lead 21 after 70 minutes. But the champions scored three late goals to clinch the win.
The match was a makeup game for an earlier fixture that was shifted to make room for a Chatham Cup game. It worked out well for both teams, as the fixture was rescheduled for Forsyth Barr Stadium.
‘‘We had a stadium date which they provided us and we thought it would be cool to play that game under lights,’’ Football South chief executive Chris Wright said.
‘‘It is exciting to get a night game in and makes it a bit more special as well.’’
It is not the only makeup game the league will have to squeeze in before the last day of the season on September 9. A quick look at the competition standings reveals how far behind schedule some teams have fallen.
Some poor weather and Chatham Cup commitments have meant Queenstown Rovers have played only eight league games, while Mosgiel has got through 12 games.
‘‘A couple of the teams might not finish on the same day but we will try to work it out so we can have a big final day if that is possible.’’
Wright said the feedback from clubs regarding the proposed South Island League had been positive.
‘‘Overall, the message is they want to make it happen, but there are some concerns around finance, making it sustainable and being able to provide good grounds and referees.’’
Football South and Mainland Football would meet in ‘‘a couple of weeks to basically finalise a proposal and work through the finance so we can put something in front of clubs’’.
