Main misses out on second final
WELLINGTON: Corey Main has missed out on making a second final at the world swimming championships in Budapest yesterday.
Main (22) had finished eighth in the 100m backstroke final and had high hopes of a stronger result in his more favoured 200m.
He clocked the 16th fastest time to sneak into the semifinals, with hopes that a swim under his best of 1min 57.51sec might be enough to make the final.
But Main could only match his 16th world ranking from two years ago, clocking 2:01.00 to finish eighth in his semifinal.
New Zealand coach Jerry Olszewski says Main was disappointed with his swim but that he had still produced excellent performances in Budapest.
‘‘It just didn’t happen for him today. He has trained better this campaign and was better prepared and was quite excited about his chances,’’ Olszewski said.
‘‘But sometimes it just doesn’t happen for you. Corey has been outstanding this week and still achieved worldclass performances.
‘‘He will be a firm medal chance for the Commonwealth Games in both swims.’’ — NZN
