Doubles for Kane, Ronaldo

-

LONDON: Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham opened its Champions League campaign yesterday by beating last season’s quarterfinalist, Borussia Dortmund, 31.

The victory was Tottenham’s third in 13 matches in a decade at Wembley Stadium, the north London club’s temporary home for the season while White Hart Lane is being redeveloped.

‘‘I hope it stops the talk about a hoodoo [at Wembley],’’ Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

‘‘To build that confidence and trust at Wembley I think is so important . . . and the perception in future.’’

Kane’s double after Son Heungmin’s opener will give Tottenham hope it can progress this season from one of the toughest Champions League groups.

Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference in his return for Real Madrid, scoring a double as the home side began its quest for a third straight Champions League title by beating Cypriot club APOEL 30.

Ronaldo scored in each half in his first match since being suspended for shoving a referee in the Spanish Super Cup final last month.

He is still suspended for one more match of his fivegame suspension, but is cleared to play in European competitions.

Sergio Ramos scored the third goal at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, where Madrid has not lost a groupstage game in almost eight years.

In Rotterdam, a strong showing by Brad Jones could not prevent English heavyweight Manchester City running riot over the Australian goalkeeper’s Feyenoord.

City defender John Stones scored twice and Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus added the others in the 40 thrashing of the Dutch champion.

‘‘They [Manchester City] play so easily, find one another so easily, have a lot of movement off the ball,’’ Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst told Dutch broadcaster Veronica.

Liverpool, competing in only its second Champions League group stage in eight years, had plenty of chances to beat Sevilla after coming from behind, but defensive lapses — and a penalty miss from Roberto Firmino — cost it two points as the visiting side salvaged a 22 draw.

Both opposition goals came from defensive mistakes.

Elsewhere, Besiktas beat Porto 31, Shakhtar Donetsk downed Napoli 21 and RB Leipzig drew 11 with Monaco. —AP
