QLDC to seek consent for lakefront development

THE development of Wanaka’s lakefront is one step nearer to starting as the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) prepares to submit a resource consent application for stage 1A.

QLDC parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin said work on stage 1A would begin in the next financial year, subject to resource consent app roval and funding being included in the council’s longterm plan.

The stage includes a car park extension and boardwalk between the boat ramp and the Yacht Club.

The existing car park was too small for present use and the boardwalk had been designed to provide a highquality walking and cycling connection separated from cars and other vehicu lar transport, he said.

‘‘We are also looking to include boat berthing capacity on the boardwalk via floating pontoons and undertake environmental enhancements including native revegetation of aquatic, lake margin and terrestrial ecosystems.’’

The new lakefront toilets at the bottom of McDougall St were being built and it was hoped they would be installed before Christ mas. Work on the car park beside these was also planned as part of stage one.

The draft development plan and the background document that contained the site analysis were released for public feedback in January 2016.

The public were consulted over three months, including via online surveys, public dropin sessions and a display at the Wanaka A&P Show.

More than 60 written responses had been received.

Mr Quin said the design and costs for the work would be included in the council’s draft longterm plan, which goes out for public consultation in late summer.

Detailed costings would follow the outcome of the resource consent decision and when the design was finalised, he said.
