NZ A players in mix for ODIs against India Green Island winning run closed down
GREEN Island’s unbeaten start to the Dunedin senior twenty/20 club cricket season came to an abrupt end at the hands of CarisbrookDunedin on Saturday.
CarisbrookDunedin comfortably chased a modest 104 total to hand their opponents their first loss of the season in the competition’s third round.
Green Island had come into the match on the back of two wins in the first two rounds of the competition played last weekend.
Opener Camden Hawkins anchored the CarisbrookDunedin innings at the top of the order with an unbeaten 58 to guide his side home with 7 wickets and more than two overs in hand.
Hawkins was also a key contributor with the ball, taking three wickets for just eight runs from his four overs. Harry Jones also grabbed a threewicket bag with figures of 24 for 3.
Green Island wickets fell at a steady rate as the side struggled towards their 104 total. Mark Joyce topscored with 29.
The Green Island team was unable to get straight back to their winning ways when heavy rain that spread across Dunedin meant round four of the competition, which was also to be played on Saturday afternoon, was called off.
Kaikorai came into its match against Taieri without a win but turned its season around with a 20run win.
Kaikorai had been handed defeats by both CarisbrookDunedin and Albion, last weekend.
Kaikorai set a target of 147 for its opponents which got going thanks to opener Josh Finnie leading a series of even contributions from falling 39 for nine.
Finnie batted deep into the innings before being dismissed for 29 shortly before Taine Bayley went, too, after adding crucial 37 runs.
Taieri got its innings off to a good start, putting 53 runs on the board before C McAuslan was run out for 18. His opening partner Jarryd Taig saw four more wickets fall before he was out for 47 as the game slipped away from Taieri.
Kaikorai bowlers Matt Hunter and Jordan Gain both took three wickets each before Taieri was all out for 127.
In the closest game of round three, Northeast Valley went within 9 runs of a victory over Albion.
Albion set a total of 151 led by opener Taylor Cumberland who was out lbw by bowler Jamie Murley, just two runs shy of a half century.
Murley took a fourwicket haul and cleaned up the Albion tail order, but not before Josh TasmanJones added 44 runs.
TasmanJones was just as effective in the field, claiming a catch, runout and a wicket as Northeast Valley tried to hunt down Albion’s 151 target.
Adam Flegg and Ruben Pile put Albion in contention with a handy contribution but Northeast Valley would go on to be all out nine runs short of their total, in the last over. WELLINGTON: Six players from New Zealand A have been added to the Black Caps oneday squad for their upcoming series against India.
Glenn Phillips and Todd Astle are in line to make their debut, while Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and George Worker will also join the Black Caps at the end of the New Zealand A tour against India A.
Ish Sodhi and Tom Bruce have been named in the Twenty20 squad, while Ross Taylor and Worker will return to New Zea land following the conclusion of the ODIs.
Black Caps selector and NZ A manager Gavin Larsen said Astle and Phillips had earned their spots through both domestic form and their performances for New Zealand A.
‘‘Todd has been one of the best whiteball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and he’s backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A,’’ Larsen said.
‘‘He brings allround skill to the squad, quality leg spin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat.’’
Phillips had also made an impact in domestic cricket, and pushed his case with an outstanding 140 not out in India, Larsen sad.
‘‘Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 we’ve picked.’’
The Black Caps will play two warmups before the first ODI in Mumbai on October 22. — NZN
