High price for Broom as cricketers shave for charity

- ADRIAN SECONI

LEADING Otago batsman Neil Broom almost got away with just a sizeable donation.

But, at the last moment, the New Zealand A player was roped in and had his locks shaved to raise money for Camp Quality New Zealand at the top of Baldwin St on Sunday evening.

He was joined by five of his provincial teammates. The fundraising event was organised by former Otago leftarm spin bowler Nick Beard.

He set up a web page in the hope of raising $3000 — the cost of funding a camp for one child — and the group has exceeded its goal.

Earlier this week, the donations had reached $3946.75. Donations are being accepted until the end of the month.

Beard said there was quite a price set on Broom’s head.

New Zealand test bowling duo Trent Boult and Tim Southee and former international Peter Fulton began campaigning for Broom to do more than just splash some cash.

‘‘They all said they would put in some money if Neil Broom shaved his head, so he ended up ringing me on the day and saying he would do it,’’ Beard said.

‘‘That got us about 500 bucks so that was good.’’
