Campbell can steal show

- JONNY TURNER

HE was the star of the last Wingatui meeting and with a strong book of rides, Corey Campbell could be again at today’s races.

The apprentice has seven rides on the ninerace card. They are headed by one of the three horses he won with on the Melbourne Cup day programme at Wingatui.

Consistent performer Zabay takes on what looks to be weaker company than in his last start at Cromwell, in race 4.

‘‘She has been working well and feeling well. She is her usual honest self,’’ Cambell said.

‘‘She has got a nice draw. The only thing is the weight but I don’t think that will worry her.’’

Zabay carried 53.5kg with Campbell’s 3kg claim to win her maiden, but rises to 56.5kg in a higher grade today.

Campbell will ride Crispin in today’s feature.

In two starts last campaign the horse looked good, running second to the progressive Bakela at Oamaru before failing in her only other start which was on a heavy track

‘‘She has been working well. She will benefit from the run, but we would be expecting a nice run from her,’’ Campbell said.

Londonderry Air is also racing fresh up today in race 5 for trainers Brian and Shane Anderton.

‘‘He will definitely benefit from the firstup run.

‘‘He has come back in quite strong, but a bit fat, so he will benefit from it.’’

Campbell’s rides outside his employers’ stable are headed by the 2yrold, Our Golden Girl.

The fullsister to early running 2yrold Our Teddy Boy has her first start in race 1.

‘‘I galloped her on Tuesday morning and she gave me a nice enough feel. She will definitely learn a lot from the race.’’

Campbell’s ride in race 7, Diorissimo, has a poor formline but could represent good value for punters.

‘‘It won its maiden over this distance at Wingatui so hopefully, that is a good omen.

‘‘It has a nice draw and if the real horse turned up she would be in there.’’

The apprentice also rides Maverick in race 3 and Roc Leone in race 6.

Campbell has six rides on the Invercargill programme tomorrow, including two of White Robe Lodge’s best mares, Coulee and Fascinate.
