Damian Brian Chapman (32), taxi driver, of Dunedin, breaching protection order (using Face book/Messenger sent correspond­ence to protected person; multiple messages throughout day), January 1, 80 hours’ community work, nine months’ supervisio­n. Public defender Brendan Stephenson said Chapman’s first breach of protection order, Chapman acknowledg­ed straight away he had made a mistake and needed help; he apologised, had stayed away from protected person since and was voluntaril­y attending counsellin­g. Judge told Chapman he regarded the offending as very serious ‘‘do this again and we won’t be talking about communityb­ased sentences’’.

Jimmy Putoko Tangaroa Rowley (26), labourer, of Dunedin, Summary Offences Act charge of assaulting constable in execution of duty (Rowley arrested for breaching DCC liquor ban; associate took exception to him being arrested and ran at arresting officer prepar ing to punch him, causing officer to step backwards to avoid assault and leave Rowley only partly restrained; other officers tackled associate to prevent imminent assault, began to wrestle with him as he resisted arrest; Rowley stepped forward, stood over officers attempting to restrain associate, kicked a constable in the back; for reasons including Rowley’s intoxicati­on, stumbling and poor aim, the kick only lightly brushed the constable’s back and he was not injured), Octagon, about 1.30am, January 1, 80 hours’ community work, six months’ supervisio­n (including requiremen­t to undergo Stopping Violence course). Gordon Green (39), of Dunedin, breaching parole (breached special condition in failing to attend and complete treatment/counsellin­g to satisfacti­on of his probation officer), October 18, three months’ jail (six months release conditions include Moana House after care).

Jesse Lee Mcneil De Jonge (28), of Dunedin, intentiona­l damage (due to have meeting with his probation officer, De Jonge became angry about matters relating to his sentence; entering probation offices, kicked wooden door with force causing safety glass panel to crack and lock to break), about 10am, December 7, two months’ jail (judge noted De Jonge had been in custody since January 21).

Cory John Wayne Ferguson (40), of Dunedin, in possession of firearm (.22 calibre rifle) while not holder of firearms licence, November 8; speaking threatenin­gly to woman known to him, Murray St, Dunedin, about 6.30pm, January 9, six months’ supervisio­n.

Daniel Erin Smith (31), of Dunedin, unlawfully in enclosed yard, Tahuna Rd, about 1.10am, December 10, sentence deferred six months.
