No action over mudslide

- SEAN NUGENT

THE developers of the Marina Terrace Apartments in Wanaka will not face any enforcement action over last September’s mudslide.

Council spokeswoman Rebecca Pitts confirmed yesterday the sixmonth investigation by the Queenstown Lakes District Council into the mudslide had been completed and no action would be taken against the developers, Multiplied Investment Partners.

The mudslide happened just six weeks after work on the $100 million lakeside luxury apartments began in July.

It reached across Lakeside Rd to the lake and closed the road for more than a week as engineers and contractors worked to stabilise the site.

At the time, developer spokesman Matt Tuck said during preparatory work for dewatering the site, the topsoil had been of concern and one localised area had ‘‘caused an area of the site to weaken and slip’’ follow ing heavy rainfall.

Mr Tuck believed there would be no issues once contractors removed the topsoil and began working on a platform of ‘‘tightly packed river gravels beneath’’.

There have been no incidents since the mudslide.

The Otago Daily Times asked the council yesterday for fur ther information about the findings of the investigation, including how a decision was reached not to take further action.

The request has been processed as an Official Information Act request.

By law, the council must provide answers in 20 working days.
