Comfortabl­e win to Luke Murphy in over30 final

THREE Dunedin surfers took home South Island titles yesterday at St Clair Beach.

Luke Murphy, Natasha Civil and Michael McNally all claimed wins in their divisions at the South Island championsh­ips held over the weekend.

Murphy and Civil won the over 30 men’s and women’s titles respective­ly, both beat ing other Dunedin opponents in the process.

The men’s final saw four Dunedin surfers contest the title.

However, Murphy — who last year won the open men’s title — proved a convincing winner with a score of 11.5, beating Josh Thickpenny’s score of 7.9.

In the women’s final, Civil put on an impressive showing to score 13.

Dunedin’s Hayley was second with 9.03.

McNally won the men’s over 45 title, also beating three other Dunedin competitor­s in the final.

His score of 11.7 gave him a comfortabl­e win over secondplac­ed Simon Brennan.

However, Coakes was the only Dunedin surfer to feature in the open finals.

She finished fourth in the

Coakes open women’s section, with a score of 6.9 in the final.

The final was won by Christchur­ch’s Tegan Bishop, who scored 10.1.

Piha’s Zen Wallis put on an impressive showing in the open men’s final to take the title, scoring 14.17.

Several other Dunedin surfers also made finals.

Mark Stevenson and Shani Ayson finished second in the men’s standup paddleboar­d and women’s under20 sections respective­ly.

Steev Peyroux was third in the standup paddleboar­d final, while Anika Ayson came third in the under18 girls grade.

Ayson was followed by Jaya Reardon, who managed fourth alongside Jack McLeod in the under18 boys, Ruben Peyroux in the under16 boys and Misha Peyroux in the under14 girls.
